I'm from Madison, Connecticut, but I live in New York City. And I had read about people being assaulted for being gay, I think we've all been called names before, but it really hit me for the first time when me and a couple friends were walking down 9th Ave in Hells Kitchen which is a very gay neighborhood, and a guy started calling us names and ending up pushing a friend, slapping me in the face, pushing another one.
Into a parked car. It was ridiculous at the time, I was like, this doesn't happen in this neighborhood. But it did. And then the police didn't really do anything about it. We called them and then they showed up. So it turned into a story and it spread like wild fire around Facebook and around blogs and we did interviews with TV stations here in New York and the police called us right back after that and started investigating it, as they should have in the first place. It was a lesson in.you have to talk about it. Whether it's.
Talking about whether it happened so you can tell people that issues like this still exist, or talking about that it happened to make the response to happen that needs to happen. Whether it was the investigation or so that the police don't neglect stuff like that in the future. But nothing would have come of it if we hadn't talked about it. There was a kid who read about it, I guess on Facebook, in California and he sent me a message and he said, Listen, I've never come out to anyone before. It took me a lot of courage to send.
You this email. I've never dated a guy, I've never slept with a guy, I know I'm gay but I haven't come to terms with it myself. And the reason I wanted to tell you, even though I don't even know you, is because you stood up for it and you're proud of who you are and you guys are advocates. And you made me realize it's okay. And that I could be happy to be this person that I'm figuring out. He sent me a message a couple weeks later. It.
Was amazing, he said, You'd be so proud of me. I told my sister and she was totally fine with it just like you said she'd be, and I came out to her roommate who's gay it turns out. And he's now in the process of coming out to his mom. And I didn't really do anything except be me. So it's pretty amazing the power that you have just by putting ourselves out there and letting people random people on Facebook or people in our family know that, hey, this stuff affects me. So it affects you, too.
Gay Airman Randy Phillips Wants His Generation To Talk About AIDS
Rtf1ansiansicpg1252cocoartf1138cocoasubrtf470 fonttblf0fswissfcharset0 Helvetica colortblred255green255blue255 margl1440margr1440vieww10800viewh8400viewkind0 pardtx720tx1440tx2160tx2880tx3600tx4320tx5040tx5760tx6480tx7200tx7920tx8640pardirnatural f0fs24 cf0 I'92m Randy Phillips and I'92m from Eclectic, Alabama. AIDS doesn'92t have a face, it doesn'92t have a face, it doesn'92t have a demographic, it can happen to anybody. It'92s like coming out of a second closet, it'92s one thing when you hear that somebody is gay and that can kinda set you back a minute but then you hear that somebody is HIV positive and you kinda say did I hear that right You might remember me as the guy who came out.
To his dad on the day of the repeal of Don'92t Ask Don'92t Tell and then put it on YouTube for the entire world to kinda see a success story. As well as my dad took it, my mom didn'92t take it quite so easy. And you know she'92s from the 80s generation where the only thing you can think about being gay is AIDS and dying very young and not having a good life. She couldn'92t think of any, couldn'92t relate to another gay person who had a normal life, you know grew up healthy and had a successful life and a career, and lived a long life and.
Maybe got married and found somebody and possibly had some kids. She didn'92t think that'92s what my life could be like, she thought it would be absolutely a horror story and I'92d die ten years later, alone and a drug addict and from HIV. I'92ve never been really able to relate to the HIVAIDS crisis locally. I met a guy on my team last night at dinner and we talked for twenty minutes and he told me he was HIV positive. He'92s young, he'92s healthy, he'92s doing this bike ride, he looks just like me. Then he told me he was.
24 and he kinda just blew me out of the water. I couldn'92t imagine that somebody that looks so healthy and full of life and is doing so much could be HIV positive. Nothing has really connected with me so much until I got here and felt that with my own teammate. I kinda wanted to parlay what little bit of attention I got from YouTube into something that I think is a taboo for our generation. Not very many people in their early 20s like to think about AIDS. It'92s such our parents's generation and we kinda think we have it under control,.
Rafi Mittlefehldt and Damien Butvick Were From Queens, NY, and Clear Lake, TX True Gay Stories
DAMIEN My name is Damien Butvick and I'm from Queens, NY. RAFI I'm Rafi Mittlefehldt and I'm from Clear Lake, TX. DAMIEN So our first date was at this Belgian beer garden called Spuyten Duyvil. And, he was 20 minutes late. I bought two beers while I was waiting 20 minutes in the back yard, waiting for him to arrive. And when he did arrive, he looked good. Like, objectively, he was handsome. RAFI Objectively handsome. DAMIEN He looked cute. And I shook his hand and we sat down and began our date.
RAFI Um, I was very late. But I DAMIEN 20 minutes. RAFI I was 20 minutes late. But it was one of those things where I, I mean, I left a little bit late but probably only about 5 minutes late. And the whole time I'm thinking, well, crap, it's one thing if we already know each other, but this is my first impression, or his first impression of me and I'm going to be super, super late. So I got there and he seemed okay, but apparently he had been texting his friend about how late I was, which I only found out later.
DAMIEN Yeah. I sent the text message to a friend of mine and I said he's 20 minutes late. And he's like, Are you serious And before I responded, you walked in. RAFI Yeah, but luckily I was so breathtakingly handsome that you totally forgot about it. DAMIEN You were handsome. RAFI Breathtakingly handsome. DAMIEN And it was good, and we kept buying each other rounds and that was nice. It was nice that he was somebody who drinks because I like that. RAFI Yeah, it was nice that he was late and an alcoholic, is what he's saying.
DAMIEN No, they have wine and you can also get cheese and meat plates at this place so we ordered that and Rafi took out his card to pay for it and so now I was even more impressed, I was like, cool, because then he got the last round, too, and now he's paying for the meat and cheese, so alright, he has money as well. RAFI And that wasn't true because I don't have any money. DAMIEN Yeah, everything was false. So, I walked you to the BQE and we still hadn't kissed or anything like that and then it was like, alright,.
Well it's the end of the night and, I forget how it happened. I think I made a move. RAFI Yeah, I don't really remember. DAMIEN I made the move. RAFI Okay, apparently he made the move. DAMIEN So we kissed and we just kinda made out for fifty minutes. Fivezero, not fifteen. RAFI Yeah, about an hour. Under the BQE because that's really romantic. DAMIEN It really was. RAFI Right next to the BQE Discount Wine and Liquor Store. It was really a nice setting. Very sweet. DAMIEN Yeah. So that was our first date. And our second date was four days later. And he was 20 minutes late.
